From the original Effective Camp Research Project to the thousands of campers and parents we’ve heard from since, these five foundational ways of being camp continue to apply. When the five fundamentals are in place, missional outcomes are consistent and lasting. This self-assessment tool is designed to help camp leaders start thinking deeply about the 5 Fundamentals of Christian Summer Camp in their specific context.
This tool consists of an introduction to the fundamentals, a 10-question self-scored assessment for each one of the five, and a guided worksheet to help analyze and implement what you learn. This tool can be completed by individual leaders, and will be most impactful when completed by each member of a camp staff team. Camp has the potential to be deeply impactful. Many of us have seen it with our own eyes and felt it in our own souls, having had personally transformative or life-changing experiences. Yet, camp doesn’t always have the same impact on everyone. Sometimes participants have a mediocre or even negative experience, causing some people to question the value of camp. Are those with mostly positive camp experiences simply the lucky ones? What is it that makes camp work?
The Sacred Playgrounds team set out to get some answers in 2015 with the Effective Camp Project. The main question we asked was whether the overnight camp experience had any common outcomes or characteristics. Through a series of interviews with campers, parents, summer staff, camp directors, and church leaders, it became clear: the Christian camp experience directly impacts the participants and their supporting networks in empirically recognizable ways. We identified common impacts among the campers, such as increased self-confidence and deeper faith.
